Air and cabin filters replaced during routine oil change service – Sioux Falls

Oil Changes: Why They Matter More Than You Think

Oil is what keeps the hundreds of moving parts inside your engine from grinding themselves apart. An oil change is one of the cheapest services your vehicle will ever get, and skipping it is one of the most common reasons we see engines with worn bearings, sludge, and timing chain problems.

What fresh oil does for your engine

  • Lubricates pistons, bearings, cams and timing components so metal isn’t rubbing on metal.
  • Carries heat away from parts the coolant can’t reach.
  • Holds dirt and combustion byproducts in suspension so the filter can catch them instead of letting them settle as sludge.
  • Protects timing chains and variable valve timing systems, which rely on clean oil pressure to work correctly.

How often should you change your oil?

Most modern vehicles running full-synthetic oil are fine at 5,000–7,500 miles, and some manufacturers go longer. But short trips, extreme cold, towing and a lot of idling all count as “severe service” and call for shorter intervals. That describes a lot of South Dakota winter driving. Your owner’s manual is the starting point. If you’re not sure, ask us and we’ll give you a straight answer for your vehicle.

Signs you’re overdue

  • The oil light or a maintenance reminder is on.
  • Oil on the dipstick is black, gritty, or below the add mark.
  • Ticking or tapping noises at startup.
  • You can’t remember the last time it was done.

While your vehicle is in for an oil change, it’s a good time to look at the air and cabin filters, check for leaks, and catch small problems before they turn into big ones.
